Local Historic Districts

Arlington County is rich in history and our built environment is a reflection of that. In Arlington County there are locally-designated historic districts, which provide the greatest protection for our historic resources. There are also National Register of Historic Places listings, historic easements and historical markers. The locally-designated districts are buildings, sites and neighborhoods which capture our history and heritage. Each of these is approved by the County Board on recommendation of the Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board. In…

Fraber House Garage Moved

Fraber House Garage Moved

On Thursday, February 12, the Fraber House garage moved 20-some feet to its new home, next to the historic Fraber home, located at 1612 North Quincy Street in the Cherrydale Community. In 2013, Arlington County established the Fraber House local historic district and sold the property to a private individual. Since the house was virtually intact, preservationists had pushed for the whole property to be designated, including the detached garage. A compromise was reached in that the new owner would…

SAVED: The Fraber House

SAVED: The Fraber House

If one house alone could be chosen to symbolize the history and growth of Arlington’s neighborhoods, the Fraber House would be a contender. Built in 1913, this charming bungalow at 1612 North Quincy Street has anchored a prominent corner in Cherrydale, not far from Central Library and Washington-Lee High School, for over a century. Last year, while owned by Arlington County, the Fraber House became one of the county’s newest Local Historic Districts, affording it the strongest possible protection against…

Fraber House On the Market

Fraber House On the Market

As has long been planned, the century-old Fraber House, located at 1612 North Quincy Street in Cherrydale, has been put on the market by Arlington County. The County has owned the house — a classic bungalow — for more than a decade and designated it as a Local Historic District earlier this year. This provides the strongest possible protection against demolition by any future owner. To sell the property, the County has engaged the services of John Plank Real Estate…

ALERT: County Board To Consider Historic Status for Fraber House

This Saturday, May 18, 2013, the County Board will consider the Request to Advertise for the boundaries of a new local historic district known as the Fraber House.
