In the late 1970s and early 1980s, after the fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War, the arrival of thousands of Vietnamese refugees and immigrants in the Washington, D.C., area led to the creation of a Vietnamese enclave in Clarendon. On Saturday, November 15 the Arlington County Board will consider an amendment to site plan #181 to demolish the 41-unit Key Boulevard Apartments and redevelop the site with a 158-unit multi-family building. The Planning Commission recommends deferral. The Housing Commission recommends denial. The County Manager had recommended denial but changed that recommendation on November 13 to deferral for up to one year (November 2015). In October 2014, a total of twenty-one (21) demolition permits were applied for in Arlington County. Eighteen were for single-family homes. Three of the permits were re-applications from previous months. There were no permits for commercial property. North Arlington accounted for all but one of the permits. On Saturday, November 8, Arlington County unveiled its newest historical marker honoring Leonard “Doc” Muse and the Green Valley Pharmacy, which he has operated since 1952. Green Valley Pharmacy is Arlington’s first African-American owned and operated pharmacy. When Green Valley Pharmacy first opened, no other pharmacies in Arlington welcomed the African-American community.
