Arlington County is rich in history and our built environment is a reflection of that. In Arlington County there are locally-designated historic districts, which provide the greatest protection for our historic resources. There are also National Register of Historic Places listings, historic easements and historical markers. The Washington & Old Dominion Railroad was an important part of the history of Arlington. Bringing goods to the industrial uses in Rosslyn, Cherrydale and East Falls Church which supported the growing Arlington community. The railroad operated from 1912 to 1968.
