In September demolition permits were record for 27 properties in Arlington County. Twenty-six are for single family homes and one is for a commercial property. The commercial property is a major redevelopment in downtown Rosslyn. Of the homes, five are in South Arlington. August recorded a total of twenty demolition permits applications in Arlington County. Nineteen are for single family homes and one is for a commercial property. The commercial property was purchased by Arlington County for $3.4 million and will be demolished. Of the homes, three are in South Arlington. The big news for 2021 is: 26 homes were purchased for over $1 million and then demolished. A home was purchased for $1.7 million in Ashton Heights and demolished. At least a dozen of the homes purchased over a $1 million were bought by developers and demolished. Fourteen of these homes over $1 million are located in one of Arlington’s National Register Historic Districts. In 2020 the County went live with a new permitting system for planning, development and inspection services. The transition has been smooth. However, it did cause some confusion with how Preservation Arlington recorded and tracked demolition permits. This is part one two posts on trying to catch up. In January a total of fourteen demolition permits were applied for in Arlington County. One was for a garden style apartment building owned by AHC, an affordable housing provider in Arlington.
