In January 2015, a total of 22 demolition permits were applied for in Arlington County. Twenty were for single-family homes and two were for a pair of garden-style apartment buildings on the edge of Ballston. On Thursday, February 12, the Fraber House garage moved 20-some feet to its new home, next to the historic Fraber home, located at 1612 North Quincy Street in the Cherrydale Community. In 2013, Arlington County established the Fraber House local historic district and sold the property to a private individual. On January 27, the County Board announced the winner of the eleventh annual Decal Design Competition — an enhanced photograph of the redeveloped Bob Peck Chevrolet site at 800 North Glebe Road. Arlington County residents chose Tommy Casey’s design, which he called “A Nod to History,” over three other finalists. At their January 21 meeting the Arlington County Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board (HALRB) recommended historic designation for the original Wilson School Building and the front lawn. The HALRB found the application for designation met six of the eleven potential criteria for designation. This is the first step in a process which will unfold over the coming months. State Delegate Tim Hugo has introduced legislation to sunset the state Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit in January 2017. The credit entitles developers to tax credits of 25 percent of eligible expenses on designated historic properties. Developers can leverage up to 45 percent of eligible expenses when the state credit and the 20-percent federal tax credit are combined.
