Upcoming Hearing: May 23, County Board to consider historic designation for Ed Center
At the May 23 Recessed Meeting of the Arlington County Board, the first regular hearing item is a preliminary hearing for the proposed local historic district designation request for the Arlington Public Schools (APS) Education Center and David M. Brown Planetarium. This item will be heard no earlier than 6:45 PM. Click here for the full agenda. The staff report is not available at this time.
In April 2017, a letter was sent to the County Board requesting designation of the two building complex, click here for article. Requests such as this, except for buildings owned by Arlington Public Schools, are referred to HALRB for study and consideration. A new policy was adopted 2015 in which gives the County Board, rather than the HALRB, sole review of Certificates of Appropriateness requests for any future local historic designations of APS-owned property. This is the first public hearing on this topic, although the school board did have a work session last week which included this topic.
Citizens and others interested in these topics are encouraged to attend and speak during the public hearing. If you want to speak, click here or write a letter to the County Board at countyboard@arlingtonva.us.
