In December there were a total of twenty-one demolition permits applied for in Arlington County. One was for a commercial property in National Landing and one for a County building to make way for a new park. The remaining were nineteen were single family homes. On January 12 “DEMO SFD” (Single Family Dwelling) is in the description field of a LDA (Land Disturbing Activity) Permit filed with Arlington County for 6407 Wilson Boulevard. This follows the December 2 application for a “Cap Off Sewer” which was approved on December 7. This LDA Permit is the next step towards demolition of the Febrey-Lothrop home. In November there were a total of ten demolition permits applied for in Arlington County. One set (four permits) of commercial demolitions is for a major County Board approved redevelopment along Washington Boulevard in the Virginia Square area. The other commercial is for the long-closed Alpine Restaurant on Lee Highway. The remaining were five single family homes all in North Arlington, 80% of which are speculative. In October there were a total of fifteen demolition permits applied for in Arlington County. One was for a major redevelopment in Rosslyn and then rest were for single family homes. This June may have been the slowest month for demolitions permits since we began tracking them in 2013. A total of four permits were applied for this month. A total of 9 permits were applied for in 2019, June 2018 was 17 permits, June 2017 was 20; June 2016 was 12; June 2015 was 29; and, June 2014 was 44. Preservation Arlington has tracked demolition permits since Octboer 2013 and added date back to the start of 2009. These are just permits for the complete demolition of a home and not for “major renovations” which often resulted in near complete demolition of homes. We also have tracked from the time permits were applied for as most all are approved at some point and the application point more accurately reflects market demand. In August 2019, a total of twenty one (21) demolition permits were applied for in Arlington County. This is the highest number for August in the past five years.
