July was one of the largest collections of houses having sold for over $1 million to be demolished and then came August with a record NINE homes on single lots selling over $1,000,000 only to be demolished. This year 33 homes have sold for over One Million dollars and were then torn down.
This month also saw a larger than usual number of homes coming down in National Register Historic Districts with a total of eight being demolished. These districts provide some tax benefits to owners but do not offer an protection of the houses from demolition. The houses include:
504 North Kenmore Street in the Ashton Heights National Register Historic District
644 North Kenmore Street in the Ashton Heights National Register Historic District
918 22nd Street South in the Aurora Highlands National Register Historic District
937 18th Street South in the Aurora Highlands National Register Historic District
6023 19th Road in the North Highland Park Overlee Knolls National Register Historic District
6038 21st Street in the North Highland Park Overlee Knolls National Register Historic District
233 North Garfield Street in the Lyon Park National Register Historic District
122 North Edgewood Street in the Lyon Park National Register Historic District
3150 20th Street North in the Lyon Village National Register Historic District
One house, 4804 Rock Spring Road, sold for $2.8 million, but also include a second lot. The property was bought by Washington Golf and Country Club, which owns all properties surrounding this home. The home at 700 South Glebe Road is part of the church at 716 South Glebe Road which has been approved for redevelopment into a Senior Living Facility. While adjacent to Alcova, one of Arlington’s private homes that is a locally designated historic district, there is no local or national historic district designation for this site.
