In late 2020 the County went “live” with a new permitting system. In such demolition permits are tracked differently and we are still catching up to the new system.

In May a total of seventeen demolition permits were applied for in Arlington County. Ten were for single family homes and seven of them were for a collection of commercial properties at the Court House Metro. Of the homes, two are in South Arlington and at least four are speculative developments. Two of the homes being demolished were recently purchased for over $1.2 million each and both by homeowners.

The seven commercial properties are all adjacent to one another. These are part of a County Board approved redevelopment of the “COSI” block or “Summers” block. The facades of several of the buildings will be preserved in the new development.

Three of the properties are location in National Register Historic Districts.

313 North Fillmore Street is in the Lyon Park National Register Historic District
2134 North Stafford Street is in the Cherrydale National Register Historic District
1812 South Nelson Street is in the Aurora Highlands National Register Historic District
