This weekend we are featuring two properties that are part of Arlington’s history. One in Arlington’s locally designated Maywood Historic District and one that is part of Marceytown, an enclave of one of Arlington’s early families. Each home was built in the early 1900s as Arlington was beginning to grow into the community it is today.

In Maywood is 2338 North Fillmore Street, a classic four-square that has been completely renovated and upgraded including a modern kitchen. Large living and dining rooms, hardwood floors, and built-in bookshelves bring an incredible warmth and charm to this home.

Since it is located in the Maywood Historic district, the outside of the house — from the large front porch to the windows to the appropriate cedar and wood siding — is exactly as it should be on a house of this period (1925). It is on the market for $999,999.

At the intersection of Military Road and Marcey Road is 2637 Military Road, a 1916 bungalow style home that has been maintained and updated but still has many of its original features. The important part of this home is that it is part of an enclave of homes (many of which are now gone) that was once referred to as Marceytown. The Marcey family has long ties to Arlington County dating back to the 1830s.

Eleanor Lee Templeman’s Arlington Heritage has a wonderful first-person account from John Marcey (b 1855- d 1957) of their homes and lands in the area. The three-bedroom, 1.5-bath home has almost immediate access to Potomac Overlook Park, Donaldson Run Pool, and Marcey Creek. The home is listed for $739,800.
