In the last 15 years, over 2200 single family homes have been demolished in Arlington. 2023 with 149 demolition, is in the top 10 highest total count since 2009 when Preservation Arlington began tracking demolitions.

The highlights for 2023 include:

• 42 homes were purchased for over $1 million and then demolished — a drop from 2022 but still double the 2021 count
  • Seven of these were sold for over $1.5 million
  • Over half of the sales over $1 million were speculative purchases by developers, half of the 2022 total.
  • Eleven of these homes over $1 million are located in one of Arlington’s National Register Historic Districts, also lower than 2022.
• 149 homes demolished
  • 118 in North Arlington
  • 31 in South Arlington
  • 48 in National Register Historic Districts
  • 52% were purchased by developers for speculative development
• 2 Commercial properties
• 4 Garden Apartment buildings comprising one complex
• 2 Civic/community buildings
