Lost: June 2023

June was a slow month for applications being submitted for the demolition of single family homes. Only 6 permits were applied for with an additional 4 for a collection of garden apartments in the Rosslyn area. Of the six homes, one-third were in South Arlington and one-half were speculative. No homes were sold for over $1 million. The Marbella apartments in Rosslyn are being demolished to make way for a larger project of affordable units which will still be owned by APAH.

A total of three of the properties were located in National Register Historic Districts. These districts provide some tax benefits to owners but do not offer an protection of the houses from demolition. It is interesting to note that these districts are “not the usual victims neighborhoods” of the R-B Corridor. The houses include:

5907 16th Street North in the Fostoria/Overlee Knolls National Register Historic District
134 South Fenwick Street South in the Arlington Heights National Register Historic District
2612 South Fern Street in the Aurora Highlands National Register Historic District
