LOST: NOVEMBER 2020
In November there were a total of ten demolition permits applied for in Arlington County. One set (four permits) of commercial demolitions is for a major County Board approved redevelopment along Washington Boulevard in the Virginia Square area. The other commercial is for the long-closed Alpine Restaurant on Lee Highway. The remaining were five single family homes all in North Arlington, 80% of which are speculative. Last November there were 25 demolition permits for single family homes, which is more typical for November. Except for 2017 when there were only eight.
Only one home is located in the National Register Historic district.

The pending demolition of these homes and buildings represents a loss of history, architecture, time, energy, and materials. Many had the potential for renovation and additions or, at a bare minimum, reclamation/reuse of building materials. These buildings are often replaced with new construction that is out of scale and proportion to the community. Preservation Arlington urges citizens to adopt Local Historic District designations for their communities, with standards for design, height, and placement that could be customized to reflect community needs while still allowing reinvestment to occur.
