Upcoming Hearing: HALRB April 20
The April meeting of the HALRB (Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board) will be held on April 20. The agenda includes several interesting items for consideration in addition to the standard requests in the Maywood Local Historic District.
One item is a request to remove and replace six arched windows at Swanson Middle School, which is formally designated as the Swanson Middle School Historic District. These windows came in over budget and were identified by Arlington Public Schools as a reason why they believe historic districts are difficult for ongoing school operations.
A second item is a discussion item on a request by a speculative developer to demolish 2322 North Fillmore Street in the Maywood Historic District. The house, built in 1951, is listed as a “non-contributing” building to the Maywood Historic District. This is due to the architectural style of the house. While it may not fit in the “expected” vernacular of Maywood, it does, today, meet the age criteria for being historic. Since the Maywood Historic District was established in 1990, there have been only a handful of new construction projects and possibly no complete demolitions. This is just a discussion item. No action would be taken until a Certificate of Appropriateness for the demolition and new construction is filed with Arlington County.
The agenda also includes updates on: Stratford Survey, redevelopment of Wilson School and Rappahannock Coffee site, and other items. The full agenda is available online.
The Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board (HALRB) advises the County Board on historic preservation matters. The HALRB nominates properties for local and national designation and also reviews plans for exterior alterations, demolition and new construction in locally designated Arlington historic districts through a Certificate of Appropriate (CoA) process.
